A nurse who was arrested again this week in connection with the deaths of several babies at the Countess of Chester hospital in England has been released on bail. Police first arrested Lucy Letby, 29, in July 2018 on suspicion of the murders of eight babies and the attempted murders of six others at the hospital's neo-natal unit between March 2015 and July 2016, The Guardian reported.

The investigation, first launched in May 2017, looked into the deaths of 15 babies but has since expanded to include the investigation of the death of 17 babies and 16 non-fatal collapses during that timeframe. Letby had been on bail since last July and was arrested again on Monday on suspicion of the attempted murder of three more babies, the BBC reported.

"This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of bereaved families seeking answers as to what happened to their children," said Detective Inspector Paul Hughes, according to the BBC.

He added that authorities were committed to carrying out a thorough investigation and that they were doing everything they could to determine what led to the deaths and collapses of the babies, The Guardian noted.

"I would like to remind people that due to the nature of this investigation it is extremely challenging and remains very much active and ongoing," he said. "There are no set timescales for this and we would ask people to bear with us whilst we continue with our inquiries."

Hughes added that it was a trying time for all involved.

"This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of bereaved families seeking answers as to what happened to their children."
