Lindsey Graham Hits Back at Trump: 'A Political Car Wreck'

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Jul 2015 08:43 PM

Republican presidential candidate Lindsey Graham hit back at Donald Trump on Wednesday, slamming him as a "political car wreck" that has no chance of winning the nomination.

"People slow down and look at the wreck, but eventually move on," the South Carolina senator told Brianna Keilar on CNN. "When it comes to winning a national election, as a Republican Donald Trump is not the pathway forward.

"We have a good chance to win as Republicans, because the president has been a bad president," Graham added. "Hillary Clinton represents a third term of a failed presidency.

"But if we're talking about the subject matter that Mr. Trump has brought up, we're going to lose — and most people don't want to lose. That's why he will fade over time."

The rift between the presidential contenders began Monday when Graham called Trump a "jackass" for his weekend slam of Sen. John McCain's Vietnam War service. He was captured and held by the Viet Cong for nearly six years.

The billionaire businessman responded Tuesday by announcing Graham's personal cell phone number at a televised rally in his home state, later telling CNN's Anderson Cooper that he received the number several years ago when the senator approached him about trying to get an appearance on Fox News.

"With all due respect to 'The Donald,' I don't need his help to get on Fox News," Graham told Keilar. "He's just making that story up like he makes a lot of stuff up."

Graham said they talked two years ago about legislation he sought to stop China from manipulating its currency, to the detriment of the American dollar.

"But the idea that I need his help to get on Fox News I don't think will withstand scrutiny," Graham said.

The senator said that he found Trump's remarks about illegal immigrants when he announced his candidacy last month "offensive and not true."

"They're not mostly drug dealers. They're not mostly rapists," Graham said. "Here are hard-working, decent people that come from very corrupt and dangerous places to make a better life. We have a responsibility and a duty to bring order to chaos."

Trump's comments about illegals and McCain "matters a lot" to Americans, he said.

"I have a lot of confidence in the Republican Party and in the American people that Donald Trump is a political car wreck," Graham reiterated. "We're all looking right now, but we'll move on.

"But the things he said, he will never lead a great nation."
