Matt Lieberman, the son of former Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Thursday announced he's entering Georgia's race as the first Democrat seeking to replace retiring Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson.
“I’m running as a fed-up citizen of Georgia and for the fed-up citizens of Georgia,” Lieberman, a political newcomer and entrepreneur, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I feel like I have to get off my butt and do something. I feel this is a calling. The gap between what Georgians want and what Republicans reflect in Georgia is huge.”
Lieberman said if elected, he'll push for President Donald Trump's impeachment, be an advocate for new gun restriction laws, back abortion rights, and support a public option to make government healthcare an alternative for private insurance.
He added that he'll expect his father, a four-term Connecticut senator and Al Gore's running mate in 2000, to help with his campaign as an informal adviser.
“If people were fans of my dad, maybe they’ll give me an extra hearing," Leiberman said. "And for people who aren’t fans, I want them to remember we’re different people and to hear me out as well. I’m confident they will. That’s all I can ask for.”
Several other prominent Democrats are considering campaigns for Isakson's seat, including state Sens. Jen Jordan and Nikema Williams, DeKalb chief executive Mike Thurmond and ex-U.S. Attorney Ed Tarver.
Lieberman said he plans to prove quickly he will be a viable candidate for in the race.
“Facts on the ground speak louder than anything. All I can do is run the best campaign that I can,” he said.
