The Hill's Ashburn: Hypocrisy in Obama's Deriding of Christians

President Barack Obama is a "holier-than-thou hypocrite" for saying some Christians have behaved in "less-than-loving" ways, writes Lauren Ashburn on Mediaite.

Obama made the comments during the Easter Prayer Breakfast this week and is believed to have been talking about conservative Christians who support the rights of business owners to decide whether to provide services for same-sex weddings.

Ashburn, who writes on politics for The Hill and appears on Fox News Channel as a media analyst, said Obama was right to cite Jesus' teaching to "love thy neighbor as thyself" at the breakfast, but when he acted as though only people on his own side of the religious freedom/gay marriage debate were acting with godliness, he was wrong.

Obama said as part of his prepared remarks: "Where there is injustice we defend the oppressed. Where there is disagreement, we treat each other with compassion and respect."

But just before that he went off script, saying: "On Easter, I do reflect on the fact that as a Christian, I am supposed to love. And I have to say that sometimes when I listen to less-than-loving expressions by Christians, I get concerned."

That's what fired up his critics.

Democrats don't have a monopoly on fighting injustice, Ashburn wrote.

In fact, she said, "during the debate about the law, opponents bullied and attacked those who didn't ascribe to their politics. Critics called them 'narrow-minded' for their faith-based beliefs which dictate homosexuality, pornography, and adultery are wrong."

Obama's announcement that he will seek to ban gay conversion therapy "will bring out more hate," Ashburn wrote.

She pointed to another quote from Jesus that she said could calm the rhetoric on both sides of the debate: "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"

She noted several instances in which she said Democrats have been "less than loving" in their treatment of the political opposition, including MSNBC host Ed Schultz calling conservative radio host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut" and liberal critics of President George W. Bush calling him a murderer and claiming he knew about the 9/11 attacks ahead of time.

At February's National Prayer Breakfast, Obama said Christians should not be on a "high horse" thinking that bad things were never done in the name of Christ.

But, Ashburn countered: "By deriding Christians who stand up for their beliefs, President Obama and his followers do the very thing he criticizes."
