Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday attacked the Trump administration's proposal to ban family planning clinics that receive federal funds from making abortion referrals, calling it an outright "attack" on women.
The proposal resurrects a Reagan-era rule that prohibits any clinic from having anything to do with abortions. A guest on CNN, Gillibrand said it's simply an end-around to stop funding for Planned Parenthood.
"It's a direct hit on Planned Parenthood, which provides healthcare services for millions of Americans who desperately need it, particularly low-income Americans," Gillibrand said on CNN's "New Day" morning program.
"So it's trying to defund Planned Parenthood and I think this is an issue that should enrage the American public, particularly women, because it's an attack on them," Gillibrand told CNN. "I don't know why members of Congress feel like it's their job to tell women what to do with their healthcare.
"It's really important that this is something we fight," said Gillibrand, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.
