Kim Kardashian West returned to the White House on Wednesday to discuss prison reform and lobby President Donald Trump on the release of a man sentenced to life in prison for drug-related charges just a few months after meeting with the president and securing the release of a nonviolent drug offender, the Washington Examiner reported.
“When I looked at Alice [Johnson, whom Trump granted clemency after hearing an appeal from Kardashian West], I said we can’t just stop with one person. We have to change the laws,” the reality star said in a statement.
Deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley described the meeting on Wednesday in the White House as a “listening session about the clemency process,” stressing that “the discussion is mainly focused on ways to improve that process to ensure deserving cases receive a fair review.”
Kardashian West told the “Wrongful Conviction” podcast that she is advocating for Chris Young, who was sentenced to life without parole after being arrested for marijuana and cocaine possession.
She said that she is working with former Tennessee Judge Kevin Sharp, who said he unwillingly handed down the sentence to Young due to the federal “three strikes” law that mandated life in prison because Young had two prior drug-dealing convictions.
Last year, Sharp explained to The Tennessean that he resigned after being forced to hand down the sentence and returned to private practice.
Sharp also said that he would work to get Young's sentence commuted.
