Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., said he plans to boycott NFL games this season as a result of the league's "cowardly" new policy mandating players on the field stand for the national anthem.

Ellison, who also is deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, made his comments in a tweet Sunday.

His post follows the NFL's announcement it will require all players on the field to stand during the anthem before the start of games, The Hill noted. However, players will be permitted to stay in their locker rooms while the anthem is being played.
