The 9-year-old boy whose family has filed a lawsuit against the sports website Deadspin over an article appeared at the Super Bowl on Sunday wearing a Native American headdress and face paint with the team's colors.
The family of Holden Armenta are suing Deadspin over an article that was initially titled, "The NFL needs to speak out against the Kansas City Chiefs fan in Black face, Native headdress," that included a caption of Armenta attending a Chiefs game in 2023 while wearing a Native American headdress and his face painted half black and half red.
The article said Armenta had "found a way to hate Black people and the Native Americans at the same time," and that his parents "taught" him "racism and hate."
The family denied the claims, saying that Armenta was not wearing blackface but black and red makeup to represent the Chiefs' colors, and defended his wearing of the headdress by pointing to his family's ties to the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, of which Armenta's father is a member.
The family later started a Give Send Go campaign to raise money for them to attend the Super Bowl and was spotted at the game, with both Armenta and his father appearing to wear red, white, and yellow face paint and Native American headdresses.
