Inaction in Congress on gun control legislation is due to a lack of follow through by lawmakers, Sen. Kamala Harris told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.
"People have been having good ideas for decades on this issue, said the California senator, who is running for president in 2020. “What we're at a loss is for people in Congress to have the courage to do something."
Harris pledged that "If by my 100th day in office when elected president of the United States, the United States Congress fails to put a bill on my desk to sign with all of the good ideas or any of the good ideas that I'm prepared to take executive action because that's what's needed."
She specified that her plan would mandate that anyone who sells more than five guns annually must perform background checks and that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would be authorized "to remove and take away the licenses of gun dealers who fail to follow the law."
She also praised the gun control plan recently proposed by New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, who is also seeking the Democratic nomination for president.
Harris, a former California attorney general, said the recent school shooting in Colorado illustrates the urgency of the issue, stressing that "We're not waiting for the worst tragedy because we've seen the worst of tragedies."
