Injuries suffered by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in an accidental fall at her home are more serious than originally believed, the Supreme Court’s press office says.
While Sotomayor will sit for arguments next week, she will stay away from activities that require travel, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg said in a statement to The Hill.
The 63-year-old jurist broke her left shoulder when she took a fall at her home on Monday and will wear a sling for several weeks and receive physical therapy.
Arberg said Sotomayor underwent additional testing which revealed that the fracture in the ball of the shoulder joint “is more severe than initially believed. Further evaluation will determine treatment of the injury.”
When she was seen in court on Monday, Sotomayor did not appear to be in any pain, The Associated Press said.
Sotomayor had been scheduled to deliver the commencement address at the University of California, Davis School of Law on May 19. She has served on the Supreme Court since August 2009 and is its first justice of Hispanic descent and the first Latina.
