The Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall came with a price tag of well over $5 million, according to a new report.
ABC News viewed the costs, which totaled $5.35 million between federal and local government spending. A breakdown of the numbers:
- $2.45 million: The Interior Department and National Park Service spent this for staffing, medical services, barricades, and other logistical matters.
- $1.7 million: The local Washington, D.C. government's expense for the event and its security.
- $1.2 million: The Department of Defense's event and security expenses, which likely included positioning and safeguarding the tanks and other military equipment on the mall for public display.
Not included in the total cost is the fireworks display, which was valued at $750,000 and donated by two companies. A separate NPR story claimed that the military flyover was included in the Pentagon's aforementioned expenditure, but that came out of training budgets for each branch of service involved.
The Capitol Fourth Concert was an additional $3.8 million expense for the National Park Service. That event is built into the agency's annual budget, ABC reported.
President Donald Trump spearheaded the Salute to America event and said this week he plans to put on a similar event on July 4 next year.
