Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange will remain in prison when his jail term ends Sunday because of a "history of absconding," a British judge ruled Friday.

Assange, 48, who is Australian, was to be released Sunday after serving 50 weeks for breaching bail conditions, BBC News reports.

However, Westminster Magistrates' District Court Judge Vanessa Baraitser on Friday accepted prosecutors' arguments that "substantial grounds" existed for believing Assange would flee again.

He is fighting extradition to the United States on charges of conspiring with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to break into a classified government computer at the Pentagon.

"You have been produced today because your sentence of imprisonment is about to come to an end," Baraitser told Assange, who appeared by video link, at a hearing Friday.

"When that happens your remand status changes from a serving prisoner to a person facing extradition," she said, the BBC reports.

Assange will face a full extradition hearing in February, after an extradition request was signed in June by then-British Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

In April, Assange was found guilty of breaking U.K.'s Bail Act, receiving the 50-week sentence to Belmarsh Prison, in southeast London, the BCC reports.

He was arrested April 11 at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he fled in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations. He has denied the accusations.
