A federal judge, who has investigated cases related to drug cartels in Mexico, including El Chapo's infamous Sinaloa Cartel, was assassinated, the New York Post reports.

Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias was shot in Metepec, a Mexican town, while he was out jogging.

A shocking video footage of the unidentified gunman shows him running behind Bermudez before shooting him from the back of his head at point blank range. The 37-year-old judge was left lying in a pool of blood to die on the street as the gunman fled.

He was later rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The culprit and the motive behind the murder is still not known.

Condemning the murder, President Enrique Pena Nieto ordered the attorney general's office to take over the investigation.

"I have given instruction to the attorney general to take up this case, undertake the corresponding investigations and find those responsible for this terrible event," Pena Nieto said.

Supreme Court President Luis Maria Aguilar Morales also urged authorities to provide full safety to judges, according to Fox News Latino.

"Federal judges are people who dedicate their lives, their personal, moral and physical integrity to serve federal justice in our country," Aguilar said.

"They require security and peace conditions that guarantee their independence because in an atmosphere of peace and security, judges can reflect on their decisions."

Bermudez became a district court judge in December 2013 and served in the Fifth Tribunal for appeals and civil judgments in the State of Mexico when he was killed.

Among the major cases he handled, one involves the Los Cuinis drug cartel and a tax fraud investigation against powerful businessman Naim Libien Kaui.

Recently, he had suspended the extradition of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the U.S. to face drug trafficking charges.
