Sen. Ernst: Challenges Ahead with Democrat-Controlled House

By    |   Thursday, 15 November 2018 03:12 PM

Sen. Joni Ernst, after her election Wednesday as vice-chair of the Senate Republican Conference, said she plans to use her new leadership to push forward the continuing agenda that already has proven successful under President Donald Trump, but that may prove difficult with Democrats controling the House.

"We have had so many accomplishments in the Trump administration that we want to push forward," the Iowa Republican told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime," listing among them the "message of a strong economy, rebuilding of our military, of course, that's very important to me as a veteran, ad all the wonderful things will be able to accomplish moving forward, whether that be through balancing our budget, whether it's an infrastructure bill, whatever that may be."

Meanwhile, with Democrats flipping the House majority, matters may seem impossible, said Ernst, but the truth is, the chambers work "in a very bipartisan manner on a number of issues that really do matter to the American people."

"We will need to work very heavily on President Trump's agenda, though," she said. "That will be a difficult hurdle to get over but we will continue to work with our Democratic colleagues as best we can to make sure we are getting our agenda done."

One of Trump's priorities is to secure the nation's borders, which will be a "large hurdle," Ernst acknowledged. "If we haven't been able to achieve that yet, holding both the House and the Senate, I see this as a very big obstacle."
