President Donald Trump didn't cut a deal with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on spending and immigration after a 90-minute White House meeting Friday, telling the New York Democrat to hash things out with Republicans, according to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.
"The president told him to go back and talk to [House Speaker] Paul Ryan and [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and work it out," the Texas Republican said he was told by White House chief of staff John Kelly, the Washington Examiner reported.
The task would be no small feat.
With a government shutdown looming, Democrats were balking at support for a bill to fund the government until Feb. 16 -- insisting instead on a four- or five-day funding deal so a larger deal could be worked on the issues of immigration and spending for fiscal 2018, the Examiner reported.
The Senate was expected to vote Friday afternoon on Feb. 16 bill, but with Democrats and a few Republicans figured to vote “no,” the measure would essentially be blocked, the Examiner noted.
A temporary funding bill runs out at midnight.
