If Vice President Joe Biden decides to run for president he would be the most popular candidate in the race, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

According to the poll, Biden has a 40 percent favorability rating, while 28 percent view him negatively. That gives him a +12 ratio, as opposed to Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders at +10 and Hillary Clinton at -8.

Biden also has a higher ratio than the top three Republicans, Ben Carson at +8, Carly Fiorina at +7 and Donald Trump at -33.

Those numbers translate to an ability for Biden to best the GOP field if a general election were held today – something that Clinton could not do as easily.

In such a hypothetical matchup, Clinton would beat Trump 49 percent to 39 percent, according to the poll, but she would be evenly matched with three other Republicans: Fiorina bests her 45-44 and Carson 46-45, while former Florida governor Jeb Bush is one point below Clinton at 44-45.

Biden, on the other hand, would beat Bush 48-40 percent, Fiorina 47-41, Carson 49-41 and Trump 56-35.

Sanders also would be Trump in a head-to-head 52-36.

The poll was conducted September 20-24 and talked to 1,000 adults. It has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.
