Biden Scoffs at Trump's Iowa Victory, Doesn't 'Mean Anything'

By    |   Thursday, 18 January 2024 03:35 PM EST

Former President Donald Trump's GOP primary win in Iowa doesn't "mean anything," President Joe Biden declared Thursday.

The front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination notched an unprecedented 51% of the votes cast — giving him a victory within just 30 minutes after caucusing began, The Hill reported.

The Wall Street Journal, however, citing nearly complete vote tallies, reported the state's GOP caucuses were a low-turnout affair — drawing just over 108,000 voters, or about 14.4% of the state's approximately 752,000 registered Republicans.

Biden himself was unimpressed.

"I don't think Iowa means anything," he said of the caucuses vote, The Hill reported. "The president got 50-some-thousand votes, the lowest number of votes anybody who's won got. You know, this idea that he's going to run away — he can think any way he wants. Let him make that judgment."

Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker has even argued the win could be bad news.

"It tells you the weakness of Donald Trump and also the opportunity for Democrats. ... look, if the base doesn't turn out for Donald Trump in the general election enthusiastically and Democrats turn out its base, this is all about, you know, independents. And independents don't like Donald Trump," he said Monday, reported The Hill.

Biden faces his own demographic challenges.

The Hill reported Biden was pressed about declining Arab and Muslim support. He responded that Trump wants to put a Muslim ban in place as he did on predominantly Muslim nations in his first days in office in 2017. He's vowed to reinstate it if elected this year, the outlet reported.

"Look, the president wants to put — the former president wants to put a ban on Arabs coming in the country. We'll make sure that we understand who cares about the Arab population, No. 1. No. 2, we've got a long way to go," Biden said, The Hill reported.

Biden's latest comments came as he left for a trip to North Carolina — a battleground state that Trump won in 2020 and 2016, The Hill reported.

Trump is leading the polls in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Tuesday.

According to the latest 2024 general election polls tracked by Real Clear Politics, Trump leads Biden 52-48.

Nationally, an aggregation of polls by Decision Desk HQ and The Hill shows Trump with a lead of 1.1 percentage point over Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head contest.
