Vice President Joe Biden would not tell a reporter Thursday whether the Clinton Foundation is "100 percent ethical" — and the Trump campaign seized on the gaffe to call for an investigation by a special prosecutor.
"Do you think Americans should be concerned at all about the ethics of the Clinton Foundation?" MSNBC's Kasie Hunt asked Biden after in a speech in Warren, Ohio. "Has it always been 100 percent ethical?"
"I think the Clinton Foundation, like all foundations, have found themselves in a position where things are changing — and I think she's going to change just to the realities of how complicated it's all become," Biden said.
"Should the foundation have stopped taken foreign donations now?" Hunt then asked.
"I think you will see them stop taking foreign donations," the vice president responded.
Jason Miller, Trump campaign spokesman, slammed Biden's refusal to answer Hunt's question directly.
"The fact that even the vice president can't vouch for the Clinton Foundation's ethics speaks volumes about Hillary Clinton's terrible judgment," Miller said. "Ethics experts, major newspapers, and top officials in her own party all agree Hillary Clinton must address the growing conflicts of interest that would compromise her presidency.
"It's time to shut down the Clinton Foundation and for a special prosecutor to investigate the growing evidence of corruption."
