Former President Jimmy Carter said the Supreme Court's rulings have led to money becoming a larger influence in politics.
During an interview on PBS released Wednesday, Carter said the influx of money has corrupted politics "in a way," but is not illegal.
"I can't say (it's) against the law, because the law was established by the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court seems to be eager to see rich people become more powerful and to see corporations become more powerful than individuals with their — with their previous rulings," Carter said.
"I think it is due to the massive influx of money in the campaigns. When I ran against Gerald Ford — who was president of the United States then — you know how much money we raised for the general election? Zero."
Carter, 93, said he saw "very little chance" that the current Supreme Court would remove monetary influences from politics.
"I think that massive use of money and the power that goes to the people that give a lot of money to a candidate has resulted in this vast disparity in income in America, and resulted in polarization more than any other single factor," he said.
"One thing that the Supreme Court is considering doing that would help is doing away with the gerrymandering."
