Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan announced on Monday he is backing fellow Republican Bernie Moreno, former President Donald Trump's preferred candidate, in the upcoming election for Ohio’s Senate seat.
Moreno, a wealthy Cleveland businessman, announced Jordan’s endorsement in a post on X, which included a statement from Jordan that "I am proud to stand alongside former President Trump and [Ohio GOP] Sen. [JD] Vance in endorsing Bernie Moreno for U.S. Senate."
Republicans are seeking to flip the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, The Hill reported. Moreno is currently trying to win the Republican nomination in a primary against Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan.
In the statement released by Moreno, Jordan said that "Bernie is a true America First conservative, and will make us proud in the U.S. Senate. Our country needs common sense conservative fighters now more than ever. Bernie is a political outsider who has lived the American Dream. His perspective, his grit, and his conservative values will serve Ohio well in the U.S. Senate."
Moreno wrote in his post on X that "I'm honored and humbled to earn the endorsement of America First patriot @Jim Jordan," adding that Jordan "knows that to save America, we must retake the Senate. That's why so many conservatives are uniting around our outsider campaign to finally retire Sherrod Brown. Time to put America First!"
The endorsements from Jordan, Trump, and Vance are expected to increase support for Moreno in the Ohio GOP primary race for Senate, The Hill reported.
However, surveys indicate that he faces a difficult race against Brown in the general election, with an Emerson College Polling/WJW-TV Fox 8 Cleveland poll released in November showing Brown beating Moreno in a hypothetical election by 42% to 32%.
