It's important to reopen the House Intelligence Committee's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and into President Donald Trump because Republicans ended the preliminary investigation prematurely, Rep Jim Himes said Friday.
"I don't think that anybody said that the House Intelligence investigation, which was in my opinion abruptly stopped by the Republican majority in the last Congress shouldn't continue," the Connecticut Democrat, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
He pointed out that after Republicans ended their probe last March, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen was sentenced to jail for lying to that committee, and Trump ally Roger Stone also is accused of lying to the committee.
"What we need to do is follow up on, first of all, the fact that folks lied to us, and secondly, an awful lot of questions when the investigation was prematurely concluded," said Himes.
Meanwhile, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr said Thursday that his committee has nothing to suggest collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, but Himes said he's not seen the Senate investigation.
But if it turns out there was no collusion, it would be the role of the investigators to tell the American people.
"Collusion is a complicated word," he said. "Everybody has a different definition...none of the reports have been finally issued. We will see what happens."
