Lawmakers have a "common view" the United States should remain firm when it comes to China and trade, but having high tariffs "isn't productive," Rep. Jeff Van Drew, D-N.J., said Thursday.
"It's tough because we want to do business," Drew, who appeared on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria" in a segment with Rep. Mike Burgess, R-Texas, said. "China in some cases has been eating our lunch and hasn't been playing a fair game. Sometimes you have to stand tough and be strong."
Burgess said President Donald Trump has no hesitation in using the tools available to him, but the problem is, China broke the deal, so it might take longer to come to an agreement, but at the same time, Trump does have the United States' "best interest" in mind.
China has argued changes in their laws take too long to implement because of their political process, but Van Drew said when politicians want to get something done, they can, including in China.
"The bureaucracy is really very much dependent on power and they can certainly get this done tomorrow if they wanted to," Van Drew said. "We want to make sure that we are being treated decently, fairly, and honestly."
Also on Thursday, Van Drew spoke about immigration, saying he agrees there must be strong and safe borders and a physical barrier, and "you do need technology and you do need to do this in a humane way."
