Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is slated to meet with federal prosecutors in New York in the coming days as authorities investigate his claim Saudi Arabia tried to extort him.

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, was the subject of an explosive National Enquirer story earlier this year that exposed an affair he was having. He later revealed what he framed as an extortion attempt by the Enquirer in order to prevent the affair story from being published.

Bezos' security team has looked into the matter and believes the Saudis, because of the Post's coverage of the murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, tried to extort him through the Enquirer.

According to CNN, Bezos could meet with federal officials as soon as this week to hand over his personal electronic devices for examination.

Gavin de Becker, Bezos' security consultant, has discovered evidence that points to the Saudis being behind the Enquirer story — which included private text messages between Bezos and his mistress.

"Our investigators and several experts concluded with high confidence that the Saudis had access to Bezos' phone, and gained private information. As of today, it is unclear to what degree, if any, AMI was aware of the details," de Becker wrote in The Daily Beast.

AMI is the parent company of the National Enquirer.

Khashoggi was murdered by a Saudi team of assassins in Istanbul last fall.
