Washington Gov. Jay Inslee testified before Congress on Tuesday about climate change, and blasted President Donald Trump for pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords, MyNorthwest reports.
Inslee, who is running for the Democratic nomination, told the House Energy and Commerce Congressional Committee: “When the vast, vast, vast, majority of humanity has recognized this existential threat to their life on this planet, and then have the leader of the free world tear it up and walk away in a petulant juvenile fit, that is not helpful in developing international cooperation.”
He added that “there are a lot of people … saying we shouldn’t do something until the last person on earth does something, and then they turn around and say we shouldn’t be in the Paris agreement. It’s not very inspiring to the rest of the world and encouraging them to do things when we tear up an international agreement we’re a part of. That’s not going to inspire representatives of China or India.”
Oregon Rep. Greg Walden, the ranking Republican on the committee, criticized the panel’s Democrats for inviting a presidential nominee to testify rather than work on more pressing issues.
“It’s disappointing today that this hearing is really more about the politics of climate change than realistic work on solutions,” he said. “I can’t remember the last time in my 18 years on this committee where we cleared the decks for a presidential candidate to come take center stage.”
