President Barack Obama has failed to get other countries on board in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday on CNN.
Appearing on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Chaffetz said the United States has done "a terrible job" convincing Middle East partners to take up arms in that battle. Obama originally sold the effort by saying ground forces would be supplied by Iraq's Mideast neighbors.
Americans don't have the appetite, Chaffetz said, to pour hundreds of thousands of people back into the Middle East to fight a long and protracted war. So the U.S. must get partners to lead that effort.
"But we have totally failed to bring along other countries and allow them, in their own best interest, in their own backyard, in their own countries, to actually fight this fight," Chaffetz said. "The president has not led on this.
Chaffetz also said he isn't confident the United States can monitor every American who goes to the Mideast for training and returns home.
"This is one of the great fears," Chaffetz said.
