President Donald Trump has attacked former Vice President Joe Biden, a candidate for the Democratic nomination, despite warnings against it from White House adviser Jared Kushner, Politico reports.
Trump has repeatedly criticized Biden, as well as several other Democratic candidates, in the past few weeks, and increased the attacks on Biden after his official campaign announcement made him a frontrunner for the nomination. Trump on Wednesday retweeted almost 60 people who criticized the International Association of Firefighters for endorsing Biden.
Multiple White House advisers, including Kushner, have reportedly told Trump to avoid attacking the Democratic candidates, and specifically to avoid giving Biden more attention.
"Basically what he [Kushner] has advised the campaign is, now is not the moment for them to be making news or attacking anyone," an unnamed person with knowledge of Kushner's thinking said.
"We've asked him — I've personally asked him — to stop," an unnamed Trump adviser told Politico. "It's not helping us. It's helping Biden. We don't think Biden can make it out of the woke Democrat primary. But he will if the president gives him oxygen."
Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy told Politico this is a phase for the president, and Trump does not feel threatened by Biden despite the fact the former vice president looks stronger in key states, including "Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, [and] Florida," than other Democratic candidates.
