Capitol Police Officer Was 'Passerby' Who Found DNC Pipe Bomb

By    |   Saturday, 20 January 2024 12:19 PM EST

A person initially identified as a "passerby" who discovered a pipe bomb at the Democratic National Headquarters on Jan. 6, 2021, turns out to have been a U.S. Capitol Police plainclothes officer, according to a new analysis.

The conservative outlet Blaze Media reported Wednesday, quoting "multiple congressional staffers familiar with the investigation," that it knows the identity of the person who spoke with police the afternoon of the protests at the Capitol and informed them that he saw what looked like a pipe bomb.

Video posted on a YouTube channel for Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., shows the then-unidentifed person approaching a Metropolitan Police Department vehicle that was parked at the Democratic National Committee's parking ramp driveway.

The man first speaks with an officer on the driver's side and then goes around to the passenger side before speaking to people in a Secret Service agency's SUV.

The vehicle was part of the motorcade driving Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to the committee's building 90 minutes earlier. She was still a senator at the time but did not vote in the certification of the Electoral College's vote.

According to a Politico report from the first anniversary of the protests, Harris' whereabouts were not known when the Capitol was breached. The Justice Department initially said she was inside the Capitol.

Members of Congress were briefed on Dec. 17 on the status of the investigation into the pipe bomb, but a staffer in the meeting said they were offered "nothing more than a regurgitation of old news" which left members "quite aggravated."
