Retired Adm. James Stavridis Tuesday said he believes the chances of a shooting war on the Korean peninsula have significantly risen, and that he hopes North Korean leader Kim Jong Un takes Defense Secretary James Mattis' warnings seriously.

"When I look at Jim Mattis, who I've known for 30 years, and I hear the tone in his voice and I see the look in his eyes, I hope that Kim Jong Un is listening," Stavridis, a former NATO supreme allied commander, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

Mattis warned North Korea Sunday, after the country conducted its sixth, and most powerful nuclear test to date, that any future threat it posed to the U.S., its territories, including Guam, or its allies will "be met with a massive military response — a response both effective and overwhelming."

The retired general, flanked by Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, further commented that he had advised President Donald Trump about his military options, and that Kim should "take heed" of the United Nations National Security Council's "unified voice" against his country's aggressions.

Stavridis said Tuesday that he was tempted to reach for a "Game of Thrones" reference, and say "winter is coming, both literally and figuratively" when it comes to North Korea.

"I think the chances of an actual shooting war on the Korean peninsula have risen pretty significantly," said Stavridis, now the dean at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. "I still think it's not the main chance, but I'd say it's verging 10 percent, maybe 15 percent. That's very worrisome. The question is what do we do?"

Three options could be in play, said the retired admiral, including pressuring North Korea with sanctions, using military options, or "kind of live with it."

"I think you can probably do a mix of two or three, and I think that's where it's headed," said Stavridis.
