James Shaw Jr., the man who risked his life to stop a shooting spree at a Tennessee Waffle House, said he went to church just hours after the incident.
Shaw made his comments on TV’s "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday.
"I just went to church so I could begin kind of like the healing process," he said. "I just wanted to be around some love. It just felt good to be around a lot of love. It just made sense to me to go to church."
Shaw revealed he had gone to the restaurant with a friend because it was not as crowded as another Waffle House location.
"We heard what we thought were dishes crashing to the ground," he recalled. "It was actually the first shot, then the second shot. As I turned and looked at the employees and staff there, they were kind of scattered and dropping down below the countertops, trying to take cover.”
He said after seeing the first shooting victim, he dove to the floor.
"I was kind of trying to keep my eye on (the shooter)," Shaw said,
He ended up rushing the shooter and grabbing the barrel of the man’s AR-15 rifle. Not realizing how hot it was, he ended up with second-degree burns to his hands.
"I actually don’t remember it being hot while I was wrestling with him," Shaw recalled. "I have a second degree burn on my hand and blisters on my fingertips.
"But I don’t remember it being hot at all, I just remember I need to disarm him and get the gun away from him."
The suspect, Travis Reinking, was arrested following a manhunt in the Nashville area after four people were killed in the incident. The motive for the shooting remained unclear.
