President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, proposed Planned Parenthood split its abortion services off into a separate organization, The New York Times reported.
The newspaper said the First Daughter's proposal came during a meeting with Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards amid threats by Republicans to stop all federal funding for the group because of abortions.
Officials in the White House maintained the First Daughter's suggestion came at a time when she was trying to help find a way quell the uproar over abortions. But the newspaper noted Planned Parenthood officials believed her advice was naïve.
Politico had reported the two women met in the weeks following Trump's inauguration.
"The purpose of the meeting, from Cecile's point of view, was to make sure that Ivanka fully understood what Planned Parenthood does, how it is funded, and why it would be a terrible idea for Planned Parenthood to be removed from being able to see Medicaid patients," said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
"The main thing that Cecile Richards was doing was explaining that the money doesn't actually go to abortions — we get reimbursed the same way a hospital does. We were clearing up misinformation about how this works."
