Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says Trump administration officials and U.S. allies in the Mideast are “dragging the United States into a conflict” with Iran.
In an interview aired on “Fox News Sunday,” Zarif said he suspects those wanting to fire up tensions include national security adviser John Bolton, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
“They have all shown an interest in dragging the United States into a conflict,” he asserted.
“I do not believe that President [Donald] Trump wants to do that, I believe President Trump ran on a campaign promise of not bringing the United States into another war. But I believe President Trump’s intention to put pressure, the policy of maximum pressure on Iran in order to bring Iran to its knees so that we would succumb to pressure, is doomed to failure.”
In a separate interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Zarif suggested it was still possible for the United States to rejoin the nuclear proliferation agreement between Iran and several other nations.
“It's a negotiating table that is still there,” he said. “We did not leave that negotiating table. The United States was the party that left the negotiating table. The rest of the… [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] participants are still there. It's not automatic.”
“I'm talking with anybody who wants to talk to me,” he added, though there’s no talks with the United States.
“None that I know of,” he said. “And I think I know pretty much everything that is happening between Iran and the U.S.”
