Iran: Video Shows Downed CIA Drone

Friday, 09 December 2011 02:17 PM EST

Iranian television has broadcast video of what its military says is a CIA drone.

American officials have refused to confirm whether the drone shown on Iranian national television is the one that was lost by controllers in Afghanistan, The New York Times reported.

The clip of the unmanned drone lasts about 2 1/2 minutes.

Iran claims its military brought down the surveillance aircraft. U.S. officials maintain its missing drone crashed due a malfunction, the Times reported. The Pentagon said the video was being analyzed.

Iran has also protested the apparent violation of its airspace. The United States has been monitoring Iran’s nuclear activity, the Times reported.

The missing drone is an RQ-170 Sentinel that can fly as high as 50,000 feet and is equipped with cameras and other sensors.
