Newt Gingrich: Trump Will Win Big If Dems Stick to Policies

By    |   Thursday, 25 April 2019 11:45 AM

Former Vice President Joe Biden could "conceivably" defeat President Donald Trump, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday, but he still predicts the president will win re-election "by a surprisingly big margin" if Democrats stick to their policies.

"If the economy would go really bad, if the president has a bad campaign, you don't know," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "Look, they just elected a comedian by 73% of the vote in Ukraine...you go around the world where you notice people are unhappy."

At the end of the day, if it's "Trump versus perfection," then "I think President Trump has problems," said Gingrich. "If it's Trump versus the most likely Democrats on their ticket vowing for the things they claim they favor, I think he will beat them by a surprisingly big margin."

Gingrich, however, said he agrees with Hillary Clinton that moving to impeach Trump will hinder Democrats' chances of winning the election.

"You know in the Senate, which the Republicans control, that there is zero possibility that they would ever convict," Gingrich said."That weakens the chance of reelection for an entire class of Democrats who are going to be very uncomfortable if that's how their party is defined."

He also ridiculed Democratic candidates such as Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who said earlier this week he challenges Trump to show him he doesn't work for Russia.

"We live in the age of the Kardashians," said Gingrich. "Anybody who wants to pretend they are a presidential candidate gets to be on TV and shoot off their mouth. It doesn't mean the rest of us have to take them seriously. Trump has been much tougher on Russia than Obama ever was."
