An edited video clip of an interview with Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has been shared numerous times as evidence of her being racist against white people, but the full interview shows her attempt to point out hypocrisy.

Omar, in an interview with Al Jazeera in February 2018, was asked by host Mehdi Hasan what she would say to conservatives who argue "the rise in Islamaphobia is the result not of hate, but of fear. And legitimate fear . . . of quote-unquote 'jihadist terrorism.'"

The congresswoman responded: "I would say — our country should be more fearful of white men across our country, because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country. And so if fear was the driving force of policies to keep America safe, Americans safe inside of this country, we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men."

In the edited clip being shared online, Omar says: "Our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country," before it cuts to: "We should be profiling, monitoring and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., shared the edited clip, and commented:

"I am sure the media will now hound every Democrat to denounce this statement as racist. Right?"

Reason editor Robby Soave initially tweeted the edited clip, with the comment, "pretty terrible stuff," but later deleted the tweet and retracted his statement, saying the video was "misleadingly edited, and longer video makes it clear she was criticizing hypocrisy, not calling for surveillance of white people."
