Leading House Democrats on Wednesday will submit a resolution regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and her recent remarks about pro-Israel groups, Politico reports.
Omar was accused of anti-Semitism by some after she recently described Israel-supporting advocates as having "allegiance to a foreign country."
Two of the most senior Democrats in the House condemned her comment, including House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., who criticized Omar for using "offensive, painful stereotypes."
"Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman!" Rep. Omar responded on Twitter. "I have not mischaracterized our relationship with Israel, I have questioned it and that has been clear from my end."
Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., both came to Omar's defense.
Rep. Tlaib said Rep. Omar has been "targeted just like many civil rights icons before us who spoke out about oppressive policies."
"I am told everyday that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel," Omar added. "I find that to be problematic and I am not alone. I just happen to be willing to speak up on it and open myself to attacks."
