The human body is a fascinating and complex machine that continues to mystify medical experts. There is so much we don't understand, and there are also things that we have discovered that still mystify many of us.
Take the heart, for example. This organ alone has revealed some amazing facts about the body. Did you know the average person's heart will beat roughly 115,000 times a day and pump about 2,000 gallons of blood? It can also continue to beat even after being disconnected from the body, according to Healthline.
There are dozens of other weird facts about the human body that you may not know about. Here, we look at seven of those:
- Your skeleton is wet. Over half of the human body is made up of water, but that does not just include your skin, organs, and muscles; your skeleton is wet too. According to Reader's Digest, water makes up one-third of your bone mass.
- Your foot is bony. Your feet alone contain 52 bones, which makes up about one-quarter of the body's bones, Odd Stuff Magazine noted.
- Blood vessels longer than the Earth's circumference. If you took all the human body's blood vessels and laid them out end to end, they would encircle the Earth more than twice, according to Mental Floss.
- So much sweat. Here's an amazing fact about the body: it contains between two and four million sweat glands! Many of these are found in the palms of your hands, soles of your feet, cheeks, and forehead, Reader's Digests noted.
- Lots of hair. You probably have more hair than you think. According to Reader's Digest, the average person is born with five million hair follicles. Of those, 100,000 are located on the scalp.
- Blood vessels are a force field for the brain. The blood vessels have revealed several other weird facts about the human body to scientists. Their connection to the brain is one of them. According to Everyday Health, there is a network of the blood vessels that forms part of the blood-brain barrier, which acts as a defense system to keep harmful substances from passing into the brain.
- Stomach acid is powerful. Your stomach acid could dissolve razor blades. An amazing fact about the body is that, to counteract the potentially damaging effects it may have, the cells of your stomach renew themselves so often that you have a new stomach lining every three to four days, Odd Stuff Magazine reported.
