The House Judiciary Committee has hired two attorneys that previously wrote a series of reports outlining a case for obstruction of justice against President Donald Trump, CNN reports.
The panel’s chairman, New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, announced the hiring of former Obama Administration lawyer Norm Eisen and criminal defense attorney Barry Berke on Tuesday. Eisen and Berke will act as special oversight counsels to help the committee investigate Trump and his administration.
"Congress has a constitutional duty to be a check and balance against abuses of power when necessary. Before anything else, however, we have to follow the facts and conduct the sort of oversight that has been completely absent over the last two years," Nadler said in a statement.
In 2017 and 2018, Eisen and Berke wrote a series of treatises for the Brookings Institution along with Noah Bookbinder, the Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which Eisen co-founded and serves as board chairman. They concluded in their final report that “there is substantial evidence that President Trump may have obstructed justice.”
They added, “Far from engaging in acts that may constitute only a technical violation of the statutes that in ordinary circumstances might not be prosecuted, President Trump appears to have been engaged in an ongoing campaign of obstructive conduct since taking office.”
