A total of 86 House Democrats voted against a symbolic resolution put forward by Republicans "denouncing the horrors of socialism," Business Insider reports.
The resolution states that "socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has time and time again collapsed into Communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships," and lists famines in the Soviet Union, Ukraine, China, and North Korea, as well as violence in Cambodia and high inflation in Venezuela.
Every Republican in the House voted for the resolution, as did most House Democrats except for 86 who voted against it and 14 who voted "present." Insider notes that the resolution was intended to split Democrats.
Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., the ranking member of the House Rules Committee, criticized the resolution during a debate on the House floor this week.
"The socialism resolution is useless. It does nothing. It does not matter," he said. "Are we talking about public schools? Are we talking about roads? Are we talking about Social Security? I mean, give me a break."
Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., told Insider on Wednesday, "I think it's the best resolution that has ever been presented before the United States Congress. Our youth are being penetrated by this ideology through media and academia."
