HHS, Corporate Partners Hit Malls to Sell Obamacare

By    |   Wednesday, 26 Nov 2014 11:44 AM

The Health and Human Services (HHS) department is launching a campaign targeting shopping malls in an effort to sell Obamacare to the public. On Wednesday, HHS officials will announce a series of new partnerships with pharmacies, stores, and websites to remind people of the Obamacare "open enrollment" season which started Nov. 15 and ends Feb. 15.

On three days after Thanksgiving Black Friday (Nov. 28), Small Business Saturday (Nov. 29), and CyberMonday (Dec. 1) the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), the XO Group, and Westfield Shopping Centers will provide consumers information about how to sign up for healthcare coverage through the Obamacare exchanges.

Politico calls the outreach approach "a stark shift" from Obamacare’s first year, when HHS used celebrities "to generate buzz about HealthCare.gov."

NCPA will host calls with HHS officials to train pharmacists about open enrollment, while Westfield malls in seven states will allow Obamacare navigators access so they can perform outreach work to get people to enroll. The states are Florida, Maryland, New York, Washington, Connecticut, Illinois, and New Jersey.

The XO group (owner of websites such as The Bump and The Knot), will help reach women who are about to have a baby or get married events that can trigger changes in health insurance coverage.

The Obama administration has begun dispatching Cabinet members to sell the program as well, among them Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell. President Barack Obama (who last year touted Obamacare on "Leno" and tweeted about it with singer Katy Perry) is expected to take a less active public role in promoting it this time around.

"Job one has been to make sure all the mechanisms work and are in place," said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA and a supporter of Obamacare.

Pollack told Politico he is not troubled by the relatively quiet walk-up to open enrollment. If the program melts down, "no hype will make up for that problem," he said.
