Despite President Donald Trump referring to the investigation into Russian election interference as "the Russia hoax" Friday morning, a State Department spokeswoman said on CNN that "this administration and this entire government has been clear that Russia meddled."
Spokeswoman Heather Nauert was asked Friday morning after Trump's tweet whether the State Dept. agrees that the investigation is a hoax, according to Mediaite.
"The State Deptartment doesn't get involved in that particular issue, per se, but we certainly will call out Russia for its activities," she replied.
Camerota said then, "the State Department does not believe it's a hoax."
"Look," Nauert responded. "It is clear, and this administration and this entire government has been clear that Russia meddled in the campaign and election. That is inappropriate, OK? Absolutely inappropriate. Nobody takes issue with that whatsoever."
"The president does," Camerota interjected.
"No one takes issue with that whatsoever," Nauert repeated. "What they did, and the president has been clear, the administration has been clear, was wrong. And I'll just leave it at that."
"Why is he calling it a hoax?" Camerota asked.
"I can't speak for the president on that," Nauert answered. "The president has been clear about this in the past, I'm not certain which specific tweet you're talking about, but what they have done in meddling in this election is absolutely clear. We continue to have conversations with the Russian government about many activities that they are involved with, and we can work together with the Russian government."
