Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., will head to Canada for an upcoming hernia surgery related to the violent attack on him.
The Louisville Courier Journal cited a filing in Paul's civil lawsuit against his neighbor and attacker Rene Boucher as saying the procedure is scheduled for the week of Jan. 21 at Shouldice Hernia Hospital in Thornhill, Ontario.
Canada has a nationalized healthcare system. Shouldice Hernia Hospital, however, is a private facility.
Paul has frequently spoke out against socialized healthcare.
"This is more fake news on a story that has been terribly reported from day one — this is a private, world-renowned hospital separate from any system and people come from around the world to pay cash for their services," Paul spokesperson Kelsey Cooper told the Courier Journal.
The newspaper reported the surgery is expected to cost somewhere between $5,000 and $8,000.
Last year, Boucher was convicted of attacking Paul and was sentenced to 30 days in prison. The attack was related to a beef Boucher had with Paul regarding landscaping.
