Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., wants the federal government to have more oversight over state abortion laws.
In a post on her campaign website Tuesday, the Democratic presidential canidate proposed that any states or locations “with a history of unconstitutionally restricting access to abortion” be required to “pre-clear any new law or practice with the Department of Justice.”
The idea is modeled after the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which blocked some states from changing voting laws without receiving approval from the federal government — and comes as several states escalate efforts to restrict abortion access, The Hill noted.
Harris' campaign specifically mentions South Carolina, Iowa and Georgia as states that could be impacted by such a law.
“This is just one way Harris will fight back against the all-out assault being waged on women’s health and reproductive rights,” her campaign writes on the website.
Harris was set to discuss the plan during a town hall airing on MSNBC, according to the Los Angeles Times.
