A 23-year-old man accidentally strangled himself while playing Judas in an Easter play, the Daily Mail reported.

Jose Ignacio slipped off a base which was supporting his weight as he readied for the Crucifixion scene. He had put a rope around his neck and then around a tree to simulate being hung but lost his balance. It happened in front of a crowd of hundreds in the district of Barranquillas in Tancítaro, Mexico.

Crowd members tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. He died of asphyxiation.

The Attorney General's Office of Justice (PGJE) Michoacan said it has initiated an investigation into the incident.
