Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries points up as he speaks to the media

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, called President Donald Trump a "cancer on the presidency."

Jeffries made his remarks on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday.

"Donald Trump, once again, with his racist tweet, reminded the American people that there is a cancer on the presidency," he said. "The progressives are not the problem, the new Dems are not the problem . . . the birther-in-chief is the problem.

"That is a unifying theme, not just for the Democratic caucus, but for the nation, because the existential threat to our democracy, to our way of life, to our values is so severe.

"He's trying to divide the nation."

Jeffries remarks came after Trump's attack on four minority Democratic congresswomen. Trump had said the lawmakers should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."
