Computer hackers infiltrated the official government site used by Americans to manage their health care coverage and stole sensitive personal information from hundreds of people, the
Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found.
At least 316 users had such information as their names, addresses, social security numbers and personal finance data stolen over 18 months between October 2013 and March, 2015, according to the GAO.
The agency blamed "weaknesses in technical controls" for the hacks.
"Without well-defined oversight procedures and more frequent monitoring of security controls, CMS [the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services] has less assurance that state-based marketplaces are adequately protected against risks to the sensitive data they collect, process, and maintain," the GAO said.
But, the agency added, CMS has taken steps "to protect the security and privacy of data processed and maintained by the systems and connections supporting Healthcare.gov."
The GAO describes itself as "an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress."
