More than 100 young members of the Sunrise Movement national climate group stormed into Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office on Monday to press him to fast-track a vote on the “Green New Deal" in the Senate, The Hill reported.
Protesters inside McConnell’s office held up a sign that read, “Mitch, Look Us In The Eyes,” while additional demonstrators overflowed out of his office.
“I am here because people in my community don’t have jobs, are starving and turning to opiods and dying,” said Kentucky high school student Lily Gardner, according to a press release from Sunrise Movement. “Mitch McConnell refuses to do anything about it.”
Capitol Police began arresting proteters about 45 minutes after they arrived, according to Politico. Organizers said 42 people were arrested.
The demonstrators brought a petition with some 100,000 signatures, calling on McConnell to co-sponsor the “Green New Deal” resolution that was introduced in both the Senate and the House earlier this month by Democratic congressmen.
The non-binding resolution is a wide-ranging environment and energy reform plan intended to deal with the impacts of climate change.
McConnell is planning a vote on the Green New Deal resolution in an attempt to focus on Democratic divisions over it, but the youth activists said he has failed to put forward any strategy of his own in order to find solutions concerning the issue.
