Rudy Giuliani defiantly declared “truth isn’t truth” during an eyebrow-raising argument Sunday, disparaging the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller as one that’s mulling a “version of the truth.”
In an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd, Giuliani, the lawyer for President Donald Trump, said he won’t “be rushed into having him testify so he gets trapped into perjury.”
“When you tell me that he should testify because he is going to tell the truth and he shouldn't worry, that's silly, because it's somebody's version of the truth. Not the truth,” the former New York City mayor said.
Todd quickly replied: “Truth is truth,” but Giuliani shot back: “No, it isn't truth. Truth isn't truth. The President of the United States says I didn’t…”
But Todd broke in, repeating: “Truth is a truth, Mr. Mayor.”
“No, no, no,” Giuliani answered, to which Todd dryly noted: “This is going to become a bad meme.”
But Giuliani pressed on, telling Todd, “Don't do this to me. Donald Trump says ‘I didn't talk about [former national security adviser Michael] Flynn with [former FBI Director James] Comey. Comey says ‘you did talk about it.’ Tell me what the truth is.”
When Todd answered that White House counsel Don McGahn “might know” — referencing a report that McGahn has spoken extensively to Mueller — Giuliani dismissively responded:
“You're such a genius — Don McGahn doesn't know. We have two pieces of evidence. Trump says ‘I didn't tell him’ and the other guy says he did say it. Which is the truth?’
