Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont.. appears to have defeated Democratic challenger Kathleen Williams in the race for Montana’s at-large district in the House.
"I'm confident we have the votes to win this race,” he said.
The Billings Gazette said as of early Wednesday morning Gianforte had 53 percent of the vote to Williams’ 44 percent. And NBC News projected him to win the race.
Gianforte had been endorsed by President Donald Trump, who called him “a great guy and a tough cookie.”
Trump had joked at a rally that Gianforte’s assault of a reporter helped the lawmaker win his 2017 special election.
Gianforte pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault and was sentenced to a 180-day deferred sentence, 40 hours of community service, 20 hours of anger management and a $300 fine along with a $85 court fee.
