James Glassman, who was the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy during President George W. Bush's administration, has said he would vote for Hillary Clinton over Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Glassman said on MSNBC that Hillary Clinton is "by far the superior candidate."

"She has the experience. She's got the character. She has the values," Glassman said.

Glassman told the Dallas News he's supporting Clinton "in part to save the Republican Party."

Glassman is part of the launch of a grassroots group called Republicans for Clinton. The effort aims to defeat Trump and return the GOP "to its core principles." He is also the founding executive director of the George W. Bush Institute.

Glassman joins a group of former Bush staffers and GOP officials who have expressed their support for Clinton, according to The Washington Post. The list includes former Treasury secretary Henry Paulson, former secretary of commerce Carlos Gutierrez, retiring New York Rep. Richard Hanna, and advisor to three former Republican presidents, Brent Scowcroft.

Also on the list is former GOP Rep. Chris Shays, who said he supports Clinton. Shays blasted the GOP convention, saying it was "almost like a lynching."

Before praising Clinton, Glassman rebuked Trump supporter and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a tweet.

Glassman has called for more choices in presidential elections before. In 2015, he said that independent candidates must be allowed to participate in presidential election debates.
