Thirty-eight percent of voters believe sexism has increased during the Trump presidency, while only 20% said it has improved, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released on Monday.
Twenty-nine percent of voters said they saw no change in the situation, according to the survey, which was released to mark Women's Equality Day.
Other results from the poll show:
- Nearly 40% of respondents said the U.S. is either "not very close" or "not close at all" to reaching gender equality. Forty-one percent said the U.S. is "very close" or "somewhat close" to reaching it. Eleven percent said there is already gender equality.
- Nearly 50% of Republicans said the U.S. is close to gender equality, while only 36% of Democrats agree.
- Among men, 45% said the country is close to gender parity, while only 36% of women thought so.
- When asked which of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates might be best qualified to address gender equality, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., led the way with 11%. Former Vice President Joe Biden received 9%, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., earned 8%, and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., garnered 7%. However, half of the respondents had no opinion or didn't know which of the candidates might best be able to address the issue.
- Voters don't rank gender equality issues high on their issue priority list, with only 3% of voters saying they are most concerned with it.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll was conducted August 9-11, surveying 1,993 registered voters. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
